Project Progress

We greatly appreciate information regarding Sir John Evans, his various works and objects from his collection. A particular wish is for a copy of a flyer Evans made: It has drawings of the implements Evans was interested in collecting and was distributed to the workmen at, for instance, quarries and railway lines, so that they knew what to look for. Many implements came into the collection through these workmen. To help the project please contact: webmaster@ashmus.ox.ac.uk Sir John Evans (1823-1908). Antiquity, Commerce and Natural Science in the Age of Darwin This volume has now been published by the Ashmolean and edited by Arthur MacGregor. Conference on the History of British Archaeology at Oxford A conference was held on Saturday 31 March, and Sunday 1 April 2007 at Wolfson College, Oxford Speakers included:
In Britain, the 1860s were years of profound cultural and intellectual change. The growing interest in the British past formed new relationships between archaeologists, anthropologists and other scientific groups. In Oxford, these groups formed new disciplinary interests and commitments, and with them, new structures in teaching, museums and organizational expectations. This multidisciplinary conference aims to address the way in which these various interests contributed to current archaeological practices. The conference was very well attended and favourable comments were appreciated at the end of the day. Download conference poster (word document) |
